Title |
Feu Charter by John, bishop of Ross, and perpetual commendator of the monastery of Lundoris, with consent of the dean, chancellor, chapter and canons of the cathedral church of Ross, granting to Andrew Munro of Nig, his heirs and assignees, one- half of the lands and town of Nig, and one-half of the brew- house and croft thereof, (occupied by the grantee and his tenants), lying in the barony of Nig and sheriffdom of Inverness, together with the custody of the place and manor of Nig for the reception and convenience of the granters and their officers, at their own expense, whenever they should happen to stay there; which lands and others had been set in tack to the grantee and his predecessors for many years bypast and are at present let to them for 19 years: To be held de nobis, rendering therefor annually £5:4/- Scots, 8 bolls barley, 4 bolls custom oats, 1 boll "sugeroun aitis", half a mart, 2 "muttones", 2 kids, 9 capons and 9 poultry as the ancient ferms and duties, with the customary grassums and 20 shillings in augmentation of the rental: the grantee and his tenants being bound to grind their grain growing on said lands at the granter's mill of Morich, paying therefor the accustomed multures; also rendering three suits at the three chief pleas to be held annually at the Channonry of Ross and doubling the feu-farm on the first year of the entry of heirs to said lands; and defending the granters, their goods, lands etc. and the orthodox faith to the utmost of their power. Reserving to the granter and his successors a part of the foresaid lands for the building of a barn and yard for the annual collection and receiving of the teind sheaves of the parish and barony of Nig. The seals of the bishop and chapter are appended (1) An ornamental shield, with initials IERL at top and sides, bearing arms:- On a bend three buckles. Motto, on an escroll beneath shield. Memento. Legend (Caps.) S Ioannis. E. Rossev. Ac. Commendtarii. De. Ln.
(2) Full length figure of two saints standing side by side, the dexter St. Peter with nimbus holding in his right hand the keys resting on his shoulder, and in his left hand a book, the sinister St. Boniface in episcopal vestments with mitre, his right hand raised in benediction, his left holding a crozier. Legend (Goth. caps.) S. Capituli Sancto Petri Et Bonefacii De Rosmarkin.
