Title |
Feu Charter by James, perpetual commendator of Melrose and the convent thereof of the Cistercian Order, in the diocese of Glasgow, whereby, for augmentation of their rental, and in consideration of certain sums of money paid to them for repairing and rebuilding their monastery destroyed by the English, they granted to Adam Cunyn[ghame] in Aire, his heirs and assignees, the one merkland of Mylburn of old extent with pertinents, which Jonet Fergushill occupied, lying in the lordship of Kylismure and sheriffdom of Air, and standing in their rental in feu-ferms at 13/4, in arriages and carriages at 6d. and in bondage-silver at 9d Scots: To be held de nobis, rendering annually therefor the above sums for feu-ferms, arriages, carriages and bondage-silver, with 5/- in augmentation thereof, and a [double of the feu-duty] to the commendator and a single year's duty to the convent on the first year of the entry of heirs to said lands; also paying suit at the granters courts, grinding their corn growing on said lands at the granters mill, conveying the mill-stones thereto, and upholding the granters mill and place of Mauchline: and requiring their tenants to ride and aid the monastery in time of war. Power was reserved to the granters to take away stones for the upkeep of said mill and of their place of Mauchline, and also coal and other fuel for the use of said place without undue interference and damage to the soil. It was also provided that if the granters should fail to pay the feu-farms for three consecutive terms, or if they should conspire against the monastery, that this infeftment should be void.
