Description |
Dated at London, Edinburgh, Tongue, Durness, etc. 24 March 1749.
'My dear Jenny, who I suppose you mean, is extreamly obliged to you for the offer you are pleased to make her ... Tho its but what wee call a highland tocher that I can give my daughter yet my regard is as strong towards her, as tho I could afford her thousands of pounds'.
22 May, 1749.
'I have minutely read oer your contract of marriage and I must own Jennie McKay has extraordinary justice done her, for which I must return you my hearty thanks'.
4 September 1749.
Re marriage of writer's daughters. Mallie has not yet had the least proposal made her, 'and considering how well her eldest sister (Glenure's wife) has gone off, she would be a fool to accept of anything but what would be good, at least for some years ... I am never in pain for the settlement of daughters, when the first of the family makes a good exit which, without any plaistereing, I think mine has done'.
1 November 1749. Has accompanied Mallie so far on her journey south, and now sends her with a cousin, a Mr. Brodie, who 'tho a presbyterian minister, you'll find no bad companion'. |
