Description |
Dated at Taymouth, London. 28 June 1745.
Regrets he has been unable to obtain a captain's commission in the army for Glenure; has however succeeded in acquiring a lieutenancy for him in Loudoun's highland regiment.
1747, November 24. O.S. London.
Sees no reason why Glenure should not resign his commission in the army.
1749, March 14. London.
'I ... have spoke about you to the D(uke) of Arg(yll). He told me that he does not know whether he is to have the estate of Ardsheal or not, but he said that if he gets it he will be very willing to continue you in the factory of it. I told him I intended to speak to D(uke) Gordon about you for that part of Locheil's estate which holds of him and Callart's estate, he said he thought it very right and that he himself would mention it to D. Gordon. It is very possible, he may forget it, but the first time I can see D. Gor(don) I'll speak to him and will tell him what D. Arg(yll) said'.
1752 M(----) 7. London.
Was surprised that neither Glenure nor Barcaldine had heard of the insinuations against them; had intended to have talked to Mr. Pelham about the matter but was prevented by the news of his (Glenorchy's) father's death, and had not another opportunity till yesterday; he then explained Glenure's conduct in the army at the time of the rebellion, and insisted to know what facts (if any) were laid to his charge, upon which Pelham did not think it proper to mention any particular facts, but said that his information came from persons well known for their affection to the government, although he had no particular prejudice against either Glenure or Barcaldine. |
