Dated at Glasgow, Minorca, Gibralter Bay. 1740, March 21. Has received melancholy news of their father's death.
1742, March 11.
Relates his schemes for getting a commission in a standing regiment, with the aid of Lord Glenorchy and an unnamed gentleman, a friend of Sir William Young's, who promises a commission on payment of 50 guineas.

'I wou'd be very glade to be cut of this island if I cou'd be better provided for elsewhere, and I'm only sorry that it was not my good fortune to have gone to a Regiment in Flanders where I shou'd be provided for or knocked on the head without expence or solicitation from my friends'.

'We have latelie had an account by a ship from Leghorn that Prince Lobkowitz has thrashed the Spaniards and killed them six thousand but all this will be quite old news to you'. |
