Description |
Dated at Edinburgh, Monzie. 1721, January 30. About several business matters, including requirements for disjoining or erecting new parishes; a legal affair involving Appin; and a financial matter between writer and recipient.
p.s. "Wee are made believe here that a great many in the present administration must give way to the iniquity of the times as some of them have done already and as the S. Sea directors have done in a body."
1722, January 24. Enclosing letter [not now extant] from the Earl of Breadalbane about estate matters. "I think it absolutely right that people of some skill and experience visited the woods, numbered the trees distinguishing what are above and what under mercat size ... The Earles letter is so long that youl readily pardon me for making mine short ..."
1723, May 11. Regarding a possible "treaty" with "Murphy's partners" [apparently about timber], in which the writer and "Mr. Areskine" would be involved.
1724, March 26. Regarding their mutual obligation to "preserve the Gentlemen who have purchased the woods from any insults or abuse from the people of the country ... I must intreat of yow that youl make ane appointment with young Lochland and John to meet yow in that country examine the State of the case reconcile the country people to it an interpose authority in the strongest manner yow can desire to compell such as through lazieness or crossness may be refractory ..."
1723/4, March 19. 'I'm ready to think that the E. of Breadalbane has sign'd Mr. William's call to Kilbranden but as 'twas some Campbell (who'se not now in town) that sent him the call, I reckon 'tis sent back to ? In(vera)rie - whenever it comes to my hand I'le forward it to Dougal that the Earle's tennants may follow the Earle's example. I have the synod in such state at present that if they dont comply with this measure at the present juncture - I doubt if the time will come after this in which their complyance can be hop'd for.'
1728, November 22. 'The Earl writes of coming down next spring and seems to have got his head much filled with improvements, whether what he projects in a coffeehouse at London can be executed in Luing or Lesmore I cannot say.' |
