Description |
Dated at Edinburgh 1721, January 11. Acknowledging receipt of £5 sterling which "I advanced for yow in the fisherie project. I wish it may produce yow or yours as much as the Southsea promised a year agoe."
Goes on to discuss possible future career for recipient's son, John, and suggests that a military career would be the one most suited to his capabilities.
1722, February 7. Including an account for recipient's son's (i.e. John's) expenses. "I wish yow would think of something to be done for poor Johnie and not lett him idle away his youth and tyme in the countrie ..." Also discusses proposed payment to recipient of a debt owing by Monzie.
1725, January 18. Saying he has been completely exasperated by the refusal of Alexander Campbell, minister at Inveraray, to pay a large debt owing to the writer; and asking recipient to take certain specified steps to recover the money, since he (the writer) cannot be in the district. "I would doe anything to be quatt of him and have payment of my debt ... If he refuise all there is no help for it (.) yow most cause putt the Caption in execution and cause incarcerat him in Perth or Stirling ..."
1725, July 6. Regarding a legal matter involving a purchase he wishes to make. "Im afraid the oportunitie is lost for I am beginning to doubt the D. comeing here this summer and if maters be negotiat by letters the other syde has the whip hand of me being the wholl Court here favours that syde for the alayship goes a great lenth ... |
