Description |
Dated at Perth 1726, February 23. Giving news that recipient's son, Alexander is now completely recovered from a dose of smallpox.
1727, December 2. Concerning the welfare of the recipient's sons, Alexander and Colin. Mr. Martin says "that they profit in their learning as well as can be expected and tho' Alexander is no ways wanting in his capacity, yet he says Collin has the advantage that way ..." Mr. Martin will soon get in touch about settling on suitable employment for them. " ... pray offer my most kind respects to your Lady and daughter ..."
1727, December 10. Acknowledging receipt of the "melancholly account of his wife's death, and expressing sympathy.
1728, July 2. Expressing a fond wish to marry recipient's daughter [not named] and asking for his consent. " ... my friends ... are very well pleased providing you be frank and bestow a competent portion to carry on my bussiness, which I expect you will complay with tho' I belive you would not go such a length with another ..."
1728, July 5. "I long very much for an answer of my last, which I hope will be favourable ... I expect the young lady ... will be of the same mind ..."
1728, August 10. Saying that although his recent "disapointment" was "much owing" to the recipient's son, "I ... do assure you that the former freindship shall not feal on my side ... and expect all of you be of the same mind ..."
1729, July 3. Attaching account for goods despatched. "One bed will serve Alexander and me while he stays and as to his education I spoke to Mr. Martin who is to advise him theranent, there is one Mr. Hamiltown teaches Bookkeeping and Arithmetick ... Bookkeeping is 30 sh. str. and he exacts 1/2 a crown a month for arithmetick but belive he can be cheaper settled with ..."
