Dated at Inveraray, Edinburgh. 1734, July 17. "I hop you'l send me some thing to keep my poket there being litle or no business agoeing this session ..."
n.d. Has had to buy a new latin 'dixionary' as he could not get a second hand one 'but wanted a conciderable number of leaves'.
1735, January 8. "I only came home from Glenurchy this afternoon where I have been since the last of the old year, but had I known that Donald was to come to the cuntry about that time, I would have gone home that I might have the satisfaction of seeing him before he left the cuntry ..."
1735, November 21. Explaining how his attempt to be taken in by Mr. Gordon as a house apprentice has met with no success. " ... to tell the truth I am terrifyed to be alltoger [sic] my oun director and mannager all in such a sudden ... I hope youl impute my letters being so blubered to my present confusion which is occationed through your good scheames not takeing place..."
1736, January 21. Asking for advice as to the next step in his education; gives further details of Barasdel's affair; and mentions [in a p.s.] that Lord Monzie and John Campbell, the banker, received injuries when their coach overturned while returning from a dinner held by the partners of the "New Bank".
1736, March 17. Mainly about his efforts to find out more details of the circumstances surrounding Donald's death, particularly the time of his death and whether he had remained on the ship Mr.Barkly, had got him aboard of " ... we had heard a wafe [sic] account that he had quit that ship and had gone abord of the Antelope man of ware which Mr. Barkly must needs know as I belived he would do nothing of that nature without his advice and approbation ..."
Also narrates terms of a letter from Ardkinlas to Invera re the proposal to roup Glenfyne.
1736, April 23. Narrating that Mr. Gordon has gone to view the estate of Kithaick on behalf of Lord Strichen; and that the Earl and Mr. Campbell in the Bank have settled affairs with Appin re their teinds of Appin and Duror, "after plucking the fether from his kep ..."
1737, February 17. "I have not had on[e] scrap from Mr. Barcly before or since I sent him the state of my brother Daniels affairs upon the 19th of January last which surpryzes me much ... |
