Dated at Inveraray, Edinburgh, Leith, London. 1730, May 6. "I am glade that your designed to keep us here this quarter yet, which ill [sic] tend very much to our advantage ... my master ... hoped I would be for the Colledge against November which I hope ill be fullfulled ..."

1733, July 4. Has been meeting Lord Monzie from time to time "[he is] so full of projects there is no end of them, youl no doubt have heard of on[e] of them that probable may take effect that is the cloath manufacterie of which he is so full that visit him how will its a part of there intertainment ..."
Mentions that he will soon be the eldest apprentice in his master's business. "Our Phisick books are very dear but of late I have got aquainted with a bookseller who is so kind as to lend me all his books for nothing so that maks me buy less books ..."
1733, August 26. Is sorry at the news of his sister's death [not named]. Narrates that Captain Galbreath has arrived in Edinburgh and is complaining of the meanness of his partners. "I have heard him exclaim publikely against all of them in the coeffie-houses and ye would wonder what an audience he has when he calls Shafeild a villain, etc., ..."
1734, May 9. He had had an opportunity to become surgeon to the regiment that lies in the Canongate, but that want of someone"to make interest with the Collonel" on his behalf had bedevilled his efforts. Mentions other individuals who might be able to help him procure a post, and asks for advice.
1734, August 4. 'Mr. Gordon went to Bute before the session raised to adjust acounts betwixt my lord and his mother, and I find he has been so throng this season with my lord Butes business that he has not been otherways imployed.'
1734, November 3. Tells of his efforts to obtain a suitable post, as his apprenticeship as a surgeon ends in December. Lord Monzie has not so far been of much assistance in this connection. Mentions possibility of his obtaining a post in Jamaica.
1735, February 25. Gives details of his arrival in London and of the friends who have helped him there. In particular, he mentions Mr. David Barclay, linen draper in Cheapside, to whose good offices he owes his appointment as surgeon aboard the "Neptune", Warren Burnie, master, which is about to sail for Kingston, Jamaica.
Also, copy of letters of recommendation by Patrick Campbell of Barcaldine to the Earl of Breadalbane and Lord Glenorchy in favour of his said son. |
