Dated at Dunstaffage 1723, September 26.
Resenting recipient's attitude to his [the writer's] cutting some trees in the Breadalbane estates. "... I reposed so much confidence in the Earl of Broadalbine's Managers and in you especially ... that I took the liberty to cause cutt some few trees in the Earles woods. Notwithstanding of my trouble about them 'tis in your power to stop them, but I entertain [as I still did] more kind thoughts of yow ..."
1723, October 4. About timber operations. "Pray please write to Colin [recipient's brother] not to medle with any of the Timber till such times as I send up Boat and men to Distinguish the Timber which will be tomorrow at which time you may have, if you please, what was Cutt in Glencaitland ..." Expresses regret that such a dispute should have been allowed to develop between Barcaldine and Dunstaffnage. "... Greater transgressions and presumptions were always forgiven in former ages and tis hard that a decay of that affection should fall out in our time ..."
1723, October 5. "I had your very kind letter for which I am very thankful. I am very glade I am misinformed about your Brother Colin.. I can never forget your Discretion in this affair ..."
1723, October 8. Regarding some wood he has cut for rafters, "twixt the Earle's woods and the contraverted marches. But hearing that you have caused stop them in the wood I hereby oblige myself to be answerable for them either to his Lordship or his Commissioners whenever they please ..."
1732, October 24. Giving details of the sheriff's coming visit to Mull and Morvern, the reason for which is [he thinks] "to have the offers of the tacksmen ready and prepared against the Duke of Argyle comes to Scotland in Summer next ..."
1733, December 8. Asking for loan of 500 merks Scots until March 15, when he hopes that the Oban Company will have paid him [the writer] what is owing to him. |
