Description |
Dated at Clachandysart, Inverary. 1735, June 21. Acknowledging the safe arrival of Archibald, Barcaldine's son. "I shall endeavour to keep him busy and to find out his inclinations as you direct. He must open his mind some how before Martinmas; for as you obersed he ought to come soon to a point ..."
1735, August 11. 'I apprehend he [Archibald] will not be heartily reconciled to the view you approved of ... A clergyman of all other should be hearty in his choice of business seeing his life must be a continued wretchedness if he have not a prevailing liking to what he is engaged in ... I own I should like to see one of you sons take a share with me in the priviledges of the brotherhood; and if I can contribute anything towards it ... you may command freely ..."
1735, December 10. Archie has not been well, but is now mending; 'as he is like to be in some shape or other an adventurer, I thought he should not be a stranger even to such airy accomplishments as are found now and then of some use in a bustling thro life, and therefore advised him to take one month at a dancing school we have got here mainly to revise what he learned formerly this way, and if you can forgive a clergyman the giving so heterodox an advise, I am sure you will not grudge the six shillings that have been laid upon this score'. |
