Dated at Glasgow. 1731, June 22. Giving details of his education and instruction in Glasgow " ... I have enter'd with Mr. Watt for arithmetick bookeeping and naviagation for which he takes no less that four pound ... There are few merchants or supercargous in this place but learn to push before they go abroad. If I have so much time you'l allow me to go to lear[n] it for a mounth or two I believe you'l see Mr. Somervel very soon [.] if you enter into a contract [of apprenticeship] with him you will make the time as short as posable. I know he will tell you that it is the same to be bound free, but it is otherwise, for I will com the sooner into business if I be free."
1731, August 16. About his coming voyage "up the straits ... the ship goes first to bunna [?Bonawe] to take in a lodning of salmond. Since you are desirous to know hou I wo'd [a]gree with the sea. I will go about with the ship which will be a tryal as good as if I had gone to France ... |
