Description |
Dated at Inveraray. 1695, December 23.
Says he has heard from his brother, [the Earl of] Argyll, that he may expect to hear soon of the king's approbation of what Lord Breadalbane did, and his dissatisfaction that the Glencoe business was brought into Parliament. "I expect you will drink my health for this good news." Encloses a list [not now extant] of deserters to be apprehended, and urges recipient to do all in his power to obtain for the Earl of Argyll.
1696, December 10.
Requesting him to supply a sufficient man to be a recruit, out of the lands of Achnaba, Ballegronnall, Killean, Glenuarnie (?), Auchinrear and Barcaldine.
1701, April 3.
Saying that he and Carwhin have come to an arrangement about the dispute with Lady Kilmun and her daughter, which has been submitted to the Earl of Argyll for his approval; but now he (the writer) finds that Peter Campbell of Innerinan has joined with the recipient's son [as his cautioner] to take a tack of the excise of this shire "altho I had offered him a consideration not to medle therin ... I am sory this is faln out when Carwhine and I conserted to keep a good understanding betwixt Earl Bredalbines people and me ..."
1701, April 8.
Continuing discussion about the setting of the excise of Argyll, raised in previous letter. Expresses satisfaction at recipient's explanations, and outlines what he now proposes to do.
1701, November 8.
Has informed his brother [the Duke of Argyll] of "the affair yow intrusted to me". The Duke, however, is so preoccupied with his son's marriage that no reply has yet been received from him.
