Dated at Polkemmet, Antigua, London etc. 25 August 1740. `There's not many venemous Creatures here (Antigua) tho whats surprising to strangers is the great noise the Snakes and Lisards make after sunset like the bells of a 100 pack horses'.
1741, December 3. London. `Since I wrote last had the misfortune to contract a Kentish fevar and ague and have swallowed above 40 dozes of the Jesuits bark'.
1743/4, March 22. On payment of his Scotch debts, `I have no apprehensions of my creditors refusing me some ease nor do I expect they will put me to the expense of diligence except my mother-in-law [? Step-mother] lay herself out to procure them to do so, but hope the Divel won't put that piece of spite into her head'. |
