Description |
1814, May 8. `What could have induced you to throw off such a girl as Betsy you know best.'
[1814] November 24. `You have heard of the exaltation of Coll House, promotion I should say, to the rank of Castle - We expect it to be habitable early in sum[mer].'
1815, March 14. `Betsy ... expresses herself tolerably content with you, and as you say you have found her the excellent person I used to describe ere this, I presume you to be pretty intimate and to have a decent understanding of each others' ways.'
1821, January 23. Has visited his sister-in-law at Duddingston where `I found Hamilton doing a great deal in the way of improvement, quite entered into the spirit of country gentleman-ism, clearing away superfluous trees, hedges, roads etc. etc., all economically, and doing much that really will pay. Old Mrs. Hamilton is about half her former weight and scuttles about as I used to see her do.'
1831, September 15. `I had the unexpected felicity of talking Erse with Dan O'Connel for an hour under the gallery of House of Commons, he is a stout rather vulgar looking smooth spoken gentle mannered man, nothing of the conspirator daring visible nor of the bullying squireen I expected.'
