Description |
1817, November 18. Recommends a schoolteacher, Colin MacArthur, who understands 'the principles of arithmatic, writes a tolerable hand and had gone through a set of book-keeping ... He reads a little Gaelic and can easily improve himself so as to be able to teach it.'
1818, September 18. Regrets Barcaldine's disapprobation of attachment between writer and Maria Campbell, Barcaldine's sister; 'it is most painful to me to act contrary to the wishes of one of my principal heritors.' Defends himself from charge of obtaining 'the confidence and affections of one of the loveliest of women' by dishonourable means; does not question that she deserves a 'higher connection,' but she thinks differently.
1820, February 1. On difficulty in furnishing an extract of the baptism of Colin Campbell, brother of Alexander Campbell, Easdale, when the baptism was not recorded; suggests that the best mode of procedure would be to record it now and furnish an extract of this; however the suggestion that the entry be falsified to make the boy appear to be 16 so that he may take up a cadetship in the H.E.I.C., should be treated with silent contempt; regrets having been made a tool of, but if the extract as furnished serves the purpose, writer does not intend to interfere.
1826, June 2. Enclosing a copy of his letter to Dr Baird urging that a new school should be set up on Barcaldine's property; describes schoolhouse which Barcaldine is having built.
1827, August 13. Principal Baird and Dr. Macleod of Campsie, at present on a tour visiting the Assembly's schools, will be at Ledaig next day, and will then proceed to the Barcaldine school; asks Barcaldine to warn the Schoolmaster to dismiss his pupils.
1830, July 5. Discusses the need for a new church.
1834, January 25. Complains of effects of preaching of one Finlay Munro, 'an ignorant, presumptuous, and, I believe, half insane person' on people on Barcaldine's estate.
Gives details of those converted to his views. Urges that something should be done, or else 'the Barcaldine property in this parish will soon become a hot-bed of fanaticism.'
1834, February 10. Defends his conduct with regard to the leaders of Munro's faction in the parish
Dated at Ardchattan Manse. |
