15 [ -- ] 1811, Apologises for not writing, but how can anyone find anything to write when living in a place like St. Albans.
1812, May 20. 'The death of Mr. Perceival has not caused so great a disturbance as was at first expected which God knows there are sufficient in the country without wishing for more.'
1814, March 11. Enquires when his brother intends to marry; 'I hope she will be handsome and everything that is good for your sake, by the time I come home [from India] you will be surrounded with half a dozen of squalling brats; even although you were, you could not be so ill of as I have been since I came into barracks as I have all the major's children in the next room to me and they do make a confounde disturbance; however I shall soon be quit of them as they are going to Inverness.'
1814, June 13. Asks for money, 'the draft you must send me must be at least £100 pounds either that or you will hear of my going to prison'; urges Barcaldine not to let his mother or family know of this.
1817, October 13. Describes the Cape of Good Hope.
1819, August 28. Is now in Calcutta after 12 months service in Ceylon; gives details of his sufferings there. Dated at St. Stephen's St. Albans; Sunderland Barracks, Cape of Good Hope; Calcutta, etc. |
