Description |
1807, August 5. London. Announces death of writer's grandfather, 'he was the best of men, father, husbands and friends, and in his death, New York as well as his weeping family have sustained a great loss'.
1809, May 24. Mr. Jefferson has resigned and Mr. Madison elected in his stead, 'but the latter although a democrat is I believe attached to the interests of his country. Mr. Jefferson had an overweening fondness for France which led many people to suppose that he loved it better thanhe did his own country, or that France held out allurements of a pecuniary nature which he could not withstand, but I hardly suppose him so mean as that, although I can find no other motive for his conduct; I think he may consider himself very fortunate, if himself and his administration are allowed to be forgotten together, this country will feel the pernicious effects of it for a century'.
1811, July 22. New York. Congratulates his aunt on successes obtained by British army in Spain and Portugal, 'I hope that they will teach the tyrant of the continent of Europe to respect the British army, or that he may be so headstrong that he may be lead to his own ruin, but I fancy that with all his skill and management he will never put his person before the British army, since his best generals have been foiled'.
1813, May 3. New York. Informs his aunt of the death of Catherine Bayard, his wife, 'the handsomest woman in America'
Dated at Waterford, Cork, London, New York. |
