Description |
1801, April 20. Hoddom Castle.
Offers herself as governess to Mrs. Campbell's daughters, the subjects she proffers being reading, writing, arithmetic, geography and music, and at the moment she receives £40 a year.
1805, November 12. Barcaldine.
With an account of writer's activities, 'we drank Tea and had a splendid Ball, we had not the coarse Music of a Bagpipe but a very capital Fiddler ... we stayed to Supper and returned about 2 o'clock, your Maids were still more fashionable for they did not return till near 5 o'clock for they had the tricks of Halloweven to perform after we left them. We were all much grieved to find the night so stormy as the next day was Rugarra fair to which I promised they and John could go; it cleared up in the morning ... The whole neighbourhood was consulted about the Weather ... but I still continued in the same opinion and thanks to James and Ardchattan I carried my point for I got them to remain quietly at home to assist me to make some Treacle stick as a fairing for them and they are now so thankful they did not go for such a set of dragle Tails you never saw as your Maids came home'. n.d.
Gives a detailed account of the difficulties of her journey from Edinburgh to Islay.
1811, December 4. Perth. Relates particulars of her new situation; 'One thing I am sure of and that is that I have not one moment to myself from before 8 in the morning till 10 at night, but I have a very neat bedroom on the first floor entirely to myself and one of the best rooms on the same floor for my school room'
Dated at Barcaldine; Coull, Isley; Perth, etc. |
