Description |
1. General. Includes copy tack, 18 March 1664, by John Campbell of Glenurchy, younger, to John McDougall, son of deceased Ewan McDougall in Ferlochan, of 6 merkland of Ferlochan in parish of Ballevodan for three years, and an undated, unsigned letter to John Campbell, stating that when the writer read his letter to the earl (Breadalbane), and Lord Glenorchy's to Inveryeldies, to him, 'his lordship was not very weell pleas'd with the choyse of chamerlane and turned mightly angrie with the leter, and ask'd at me if you hade write ane answer to it, which I told I hade to send, then his lordship commanded me to bring it in order to open it, for fear you hade writt something in it that would not be agreeable, for his lordship aledged that pairt of old Blacksandy spirit might come upon you upon the recept of such a leter, then his lordship took notice of your seall and armes, moto and all, and turned in very good humor, critisieing on the arms of your family, and wrote a very harsh postscript to my l(ord) G(lenorchy), notwithstand your leter entreated otherways and I did the lyke, to which he ansuer'd in passion, there should never be a chamerlane in Bread: but of his choyseing while he lived'. 1647-84.
