Description |
1786, August 1. 'There are just at this moment 13 women Gentle and Simple in this house and I declare upon my honor that except two or three they are doing not a pin's head worth of good from one end of the day to the other'.
1791, August 18. Letter will be delivered to him by Alexander Hunter who is to settle in Argyleshire to give out webs to weavers on Dale's account; 'I hope that this first attempt will be only an introduction to greater and more extensive manufactures in the Highlands which will give employment to all who are willing to remain in their native country and put a stop to emigrations which are Equally hurtfull to the Country and to the poor people who foolishly imagine that they are to be better in America. I shall reckon it one of the most happy circumstances in my life if I shall be so fortunate as to draw the attention of the people to Industry at home and I hope that the time is not far distant when all the people in Scotland that are willing to work will find full employment in every part of the country in various manufactures, particularly in the Woolen and Cotton branches'
