Description |
1773, April 16. Complains of their father's treatment of him - making him live upon £31.10s, £4.10s less than the salary of a common excisema
1782, June 3. Inveraray. Is distressed at their mother's intention of leaving her home and the remains of her family.
n.d. (1782). Laments disputes between their parents, 'For my own part I swear to you at this moment I am tired of this world. We are and have been since I ever remember any thing the common topick of conversation amongst all ranks of people in the different countries round about. There is an eternal quarrel with some one or other of the family so that the fire no sooner begins to burn low than there is fresh fuel added. I will not presume to investigate the cause of it ... but this much I will say he is certainly an unfortunate man who has found it necessary some time or other to have serious quarells with each of his five sons, his wife and his only Daughter'.
13 letters (2 copies of one, and 2 incomplete), 1 enclosure (a letter from Lord Barrington refusing to promote James over the other captains) and 4 answers, one of 1782, May 25, announcing that their mother is resolved to leave their father; James is the only one who can possibly dissuade her from this
