Description |
1776, August 11. Cove of Corke.
'I arived hear upon the 9th of August with a parcel of recruits that would as soon cut my throat as not'.
1780-3. St. Lucia. Letters from St. Lucia deal almost entirely with the writer's need for money, and repeated appeals not to let his bills be protested.
1784, June 30. Coldstream. Has formed a partiality for Donald Cameron's daughter, and has set off for Scotland with her; wishes to marry her if her father will consent to a reconciliation, as some of her fortune depends on Mr. Burrel, 'who is rather a drole old man and if he knew my situation he might be whimsical enough to alter his mind'.
October 1784, Agreeing that Hugh may come to Barcaldine if he choses to run the risk of being seized by his creditors
1785, July 16. Protests at Mr. Cameron's intention to settle £500 on his daughter, provided it can be secured to her and hers to his satisfaction; 'this is making a mear nothing of me and at the same time putting it in a woman's power to tell me that what I leeve on is hers and that of course she will do this and tother, if we should ever happen to differ in opinion, as I dare to say will be the case for at present we dont hit it over and above well, this sircumstance, my dear Sandy, you will be so good as let him know, that the best way will be for each party to shift for themselves; all I can say is God have mercy on a man with a wife that turns out contrary to his expectations for its my case in every sence of the word'
