Description |
14 May 1785. Sends a letter to Barcaldine to be forwarded, 'as you have more gilliwatfoots about you than I can command'. Dated at Inveraray etc. Note - 'The Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue' defines gilliewetfoot as 'an attendant who carries a highland chief across a stream,' although 'The Scottish National Dictionary' gives only a secondary meaning, 'a worthless fellow, a swindler'. |
