1786, September 13. Wishes to become a millwright, 'which is the best business for going a broad with'; urges his uncle to write him quickly for he is wasting time going idle about Glasgow 'lik any other fool, till yesterday I went to school for to learn mathematic'; informs recipient that Mr. and Mrs. Dale have gone to London.
22 January 1787. Is resolved to follow the weaving business.
1787, September 17. Re weaving business in Glasgow, 'we have had a Great riot about the prices of the muslin which the manufactorers was wanting to reduce the fourth part if the price, and I am afraid it will spoil the business for there is a Great many of weavers Gone to Manchester and to Irland and they will carrie the business away out of this place'.
1797, April 14. 'There is no appearance of better tread as yet, I have been working at a very bad work ever since I came out yet, and paid it the greatest attension that I could, I went to my work at five in the morning all winter over and wrought very often till twelve at night which my master and my lanlady can tell as well is [as] me, and Mr. Dale might very well geate me better work when he mannufactores himself and Gives work to worse weavers than me, which I can prove, but Mr. Dale Gives very little trouble to himself about any thing but what belongs to himself'.
1798, October 28. Has just arrived on parole from France after a long and severe imprisonment, wishes Barcaldine's interest to get him a company in one of the Black regiments to be raised.
n.d. Announces that he is determined not to be a burden, although 'I know how much it is in your power to serve me but I am not to suppose that power will be much exerted' |
