Description |
Dated at North Queens Ferry; Hampton Road, Virginia.
4 September 1768. Gives details of a conversation with Glenure, turning entirely on recipient's lack of attention to business and extravagence; assures him he will hear it all over again in person, and advises him to confess freely that company had led him into some dissipation, and that in future he will live within the £75 a year allowed him by his father; urges him to 'reflect that the spirit of youth is but too apt to led people into steps of disapprobation at riper years'.
27 September 1768. Dissuades him from giving up law, in hopes of inheriting estate of Glenure, 'I cannot see that an idle life is to be supported at all cheaper than in pursuit of respectable business'.
4 October 1768. 'Mally had a letter from Mrs. Cameron, Fassfern, lately commissioning sunderie babie apparatus - but this is a profound secret'.
1776, February 20. Hampton Road, Virginia. Has recovered from wounds received at battle of Bunkers Hill; rebels continue to blockade Boston; New York occupied by 3 to 4,000 rebels under General Lee; failed to take Quebec; expects reinforcements, 'I hope the Ministry will Act with the true British spirit and not suffer a Parcell of wrong headed Bandittie and of Desperate Fortunes to Disturb and Disconcert their just rights and authority ... It is not to be doubted but the heat of Independency must slacken, the appearance of a Formidible British Army this summer will encourage the friends of good Government to show themselves, also the Rebellious Promotters of the Publick Disturbances I hope will meet with their Deserts and their Schemes soon fall to the Ground' |
