Description |
Dated at Glasgow. 25 April 1746. Announces result of battle of Culloden.
1754. Re straightening marches with Graham of Dochray.
4 March 1778. Gives an account of Colin, Glenure's son, and his entanglement with a servant maid in Glasgow.
5 June 1779. Suggests that one of Glenure's friends should be sent to bring his son, Sandy, home from London, 'tho your son has acted foolishly you ought not to dispair of him'.
7 July 1779. Is willing to fetch Sandy himself, but points out that some money will be necessary, as if Sandy owes money in London, he will not be allowed to leave it without paying his debts, and surely he would not wish his son to leave London like a thief in the night.
10 August 1779. Has returned to Glasgow without Sandy, but hopes that it will not be long before Glenure sees him; has not given Sandy any money in case it was an inducement to stay longer.
6 November 1780. Has heard from his sister, Glenure's wife, who intend to leave her husband; 'she upbraids me of being the cause of her living a hell upon earth for many years past ... since matters are in such a situation I cannot help thinking but that parting would be as well as otherwise'; enquires what aliment Glenure is willing to give. With a scroll answer, complaining of her deserting her husband and family, after having lived with him for 27 years, offering her £20 a year along with the butter and cheese made on the farm, enough to serve the family and £50 of the wool, if she returns to him.
71 letters, a scroll answer, two letters from Alexander Campbell, Glenure's son, and some enclosures. |
