Description |
Dated at New York, St. Lucia, Newcastle, etc.
12 December 1775. Has the offer of an ensigncy, although he knows that the necessary £150 will inconvenience his father; points out that it may 'some daye or other be the means of getting me a step that will ensure me genteel bread for life'.
22 July 1778. New Yorke. Apologises for drawing on Glenure for £40; assures him that he is not a gambler nor a man of gallantry, 'but after all my money goes and I dont know how rightly ... We are Blocked up at present by a French fleet, how soon they take there departure the Lord knows, they have been of the Hoock for a good many Days which is about 4 Leagues from the town of New Yorke and my Lord How is inside of them ... The French fellows have stopt the Fishing Boats which is a very great loss to us, it was the only thing we could buy cheap, that is what we call Cheap at a sixpence a Pound'.
1783, September 26. Has been taken in by Donald Cameron and very kindly treated; his knee is no better |
