Dated at Inveraray. 1759, May 6.
On proposed removal of ferry eastwards from Portsonnachan, as urged by Combie.
1759, August 4.
'To my great joy I got quit of the ministers yesterday before dinner - We had the shortest synod that has been for 40 years, notwithstanding that we had nothing to do: for you must know they generally sit longest when they have least business'.
1759, November 3.
'After the first alarm we had about M. Thurot we heard no more of him, neither by private letters or publick papers, so that we begin to think he was not bound for any part of Scotland, nay it is not quite certain if he has yet left Dunkirk'.
1760, October 15.
'This mail carrys you great and glorious news from N. America which is now all our own without spilling one drop of blood'.
1761, June 30.
'About 12 o'clock this day His Grace arrived here and with him the marquis ... Mr. Adam, the architect, came here Sunday evening - not to accelerate our works but the contrary'.
1761, July 24.
Death of Duke of Douglas, 'when his repositories were opened, the deeds he had formerly made in favour of the family of Hamilton were found concelled, and new ones on place of them in favour of Lady Jean's son ... He has appointed his body to be buried in his bowling green at Douglass - These particulars I give you hot from our duke's mouth'.
1761, August 8.
'For to tell God's truth I am no more master of myself or my time than you are of the great Mogul's - in carrying on the Duke's service at Edinburgh ... Thank God there is a prospect of some end being soon put to all this farce and fikery (a great part of it deserves no better nam for I fear it will put no money in my pocket) as we are told His Grace is to leave this time enough to overtake the Coronation the 22nd September. |
