Chapelton Free Church began at the Disruption, when the minister of the existing quoad sacra parish and almost all of his congregation adhered to the Free Church. A church was soon built, but the area suffered from the decline of handloom weaving and the charge was reduced to a preaching station in 1849. Sanction was restored in 1855 and a new church built in 1888. On transfer to the United Free Church the property was claimed by the Free Church, but restored by the Royal Commission. At the union of 1929 it briefly became Chapelton North, before uniting with Chapelton Old as Chapelton in 1930. The United Free charge was in the presbytery of Hamilton and the synod of Glasgow. |
