Hamilton, Associate Congregation (Burgher) Church began with a petition for sermon to the Burgher Presbytery of Glasgow in 1798. The first minister was ordained in 1800. It passed to the United Presbyterian Church and for a time was called Chapel Street United Presbyterian Church until a new church was built in Avon Street in 1895. At the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, the charge took the name of Hamilton, Avon Street United Free Church, and passed back to the Established church in 1929 as Hamilton, Avon Street Church of Scotland. The Church of Scotland charge, which was in the presbytery of Hamilton and the synod of Clydesdale, was first linked with Hamilton Brandon in 1963 and then united with it as Hamilton St Andrew's in 1967. |
