The Free Church Highlands and Islands Committee began as a Standing Committee on the Highlands, appointed under an Act of 30 May 1849, which cited the 'extensive and lamentable destitution of the means of grace in the Highlands and Islands'. It was mainly concerned with raising funds for church endowment and from 1860 was regularly referred as the Committee on the Highlands and Islands. From 1881 its convener was Robert Rainy (1826-1906, see DNB). |
