Edinburgh, St George's Free Church was formed at the Disruption. The minister of the existing St George's parish church, Robert S Candlish (1806-1873), became one of the most prominent figures in the Free Church and went on to serve as minister of St George's Free Church until his death. A new church building, opened in 1845, was compulsorily purchased by the railway company in 1866 and replaced by a successor in Shandwick Place, opened in 1869. It passed successively to the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, in the latter case as St George's West. The Church of Scotland charge is in the presbytery of Edinburgh and was in the synod of Lothian and Tweeddale until the abolition of synods in 1993. |
