Edinburgh, Abbeyhill United Presbyterian Church originated in mission work in the Canongate area by Broughton Place Church from 1855 onwards. By 1860 a congregation was renting Mary's Chapel in High Street. A minister was inducted to the charge, as Mary's Chapel, in the following year. On removal to a new church in 1871 the name was changed to Blackfriars Street. In 1895 it moved again to Abbeyhill, to an extension church. It passed to the United Free Church as Abbeyhill, with yet another church building, opened in 1900. In 1910 Abbeyhill and Holyrood united as Edinburgh Holyrood-Abbey United Free. The United Free charge was in the presbytery of Edinburgh and the synod of Lothian. |
