Arbroath, Park Street (St Paul's) United Presbyterian Church had an unusual early history, having been founded as a Methodist connection which then moved towards the Relief Church, the members calling themselves Relief Methodists. Their numbers declined and their minister left, but in 1830 they successfully applied for sermon to the Relief Presbytery of Perth. A Relief minister was appointed in 1831. They passed successively to the United Presbytery and United Free Churches, in the latter case as St Paul's, which united with Arbroath High Street under that name in 1908. The United Free charge was in the presbytery of Arbroath and Forfar and the synod of Fife and Angus. |
