Arbroath, High Street Free Church originated with a group of Seceders in 1782, an offshoot from a congregation at Dumbarrow. In 1806 this group split and about half of the membership adhered to the Constitutional Presbytery, worshipping in a school until their church in Maule Street was erected in 1821. In 1852 this congregation had to consider union with the Free Church. The majority acceded but the minority (as Maule Street Original Secession Church) retained the church building. The Free Church adherents purchased an old Episcopalian church in High Street and took that name. Their congregation passed to the United Free Church and united with Arbroath St Paul's in 1908. The united congregation then further united with Arbroath East as Arbroath St Ninian's in 1924. The United Free charge was in the presbytery of Arbroath and Forfar and the synod of Fife and Angus. |
