Melrose United Associate Congregation originated with a group from the town and surrounding area who petitioned the Secession Presbytery of Melrose to be formed as a congregation. A church was built in 1823 and the first minister ordained in 1825. It passed successively to the United Presbyterian and United Free Churches, in the latter case as Melrose High Cross, and in 1929 to the Church of Scotland. The Church of Scotland charge, which was in the presbytery of Melrose and synod of Merse and Teviotdale, united with Melrose St Cuthbert's as Melrose in 1984. |
