Hightae Reformed Presbyterian Church had its earliest origins in 1797, when a group from the village of that name, which lies south of Lochmaben, petitioned for sermon to the Relief Presbytery of Dumfries. After some initial progress the initiative was apparently abandoned, but in 1828 their uncompleted church building was purchased by another small group who formed an RP congregation. They obtained a minister in the following year, joined the general adherence of their denomination to the Free Church in 1876, passed to the United Free Church and united with Dalton in 1904 as Hightae and Dalto n United Free. The United Free charge was in the presbytery of Annandale and the synod of Dumfries and Galloway. In 1929 when the United Free Church passed back to the Established Church, the congregation became Hightae Church of Scotland. The congregation was linked with that of Dalton Church of Scotland in 1957, with a further link taking place with St Mungo on the 1 July 1976. |
