Paisley, Martyrs' Free Church originated as Paisley (Burgher) Church, a congregation founded in 1800, which split in the 1830s over the voluntary controversy. The majority applied to the United Secession Church for admission in 1835; the minority first joined the Church of Scotland in 1839 and then the Free Church in 1843. The minority for a time retained the Martyrs' church, which had been erected in George Street in 1822. They were expelled from it, however, and built a new church for themselves, opened in 1848. It passed successively to the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, in the latter case as Paisley Martyrs' Memorial. The United Free charge was in the presbytery of Paisley and the synod of Glasgow. |
