The Kirk Session of Newtown was established c1773 within the Burgher Church. Ministers for the church are recorded from 1780. In 1900, it became part of the Presbytery of Galashiels within the United Free Church, and in 1929, part of the Presbytery of Melrose within the Church of Scotland. With the restructuring of presbyteries in 1976, it then became part of the Presbytery of Melrose and Peebles. In 1981, it was linked with Maxton. However, this link was terminated in 1994 in favour of a link with Bowden. |
