Bowden Free Church originated at the Disruption, when the minister and almost all the congregation of the existing parish church adhered to the Free Church. The church building dated from 1843. It passed to the United Free Church and united with Newtown in 1929. The Free Church charge was in the presbytery of Selkirk and the synod of Merse and Teviotdale.
