Earlston West (Relief) Church originated with a disputed presentation to Earlston parish in 1778. A petition was presented to the Relief Presbytery of Edinburgh and a church was built. The first minister had been settled by 1780. It passed to the United Presbyterian Church in 1847, but there were now two United Presbyterian churches in a town with a population below 1000. When a vacancy occurred, negotiations for union were undertaken, finalised in 1887. The United Presbyterian charge was in the presbytery of Melrose. |
