Earlston East (Antiburgher) Church was established in this centre of the early Seceders in Berwickshire in the mid-eighteenth century. The first minister was ordained in 1751, to what was then referred to as 'the Associate congregation of Earlston and Stitchel'. It joined the United Presbyterian Church and in 1887 united with another United Presbyterian congregation in the town, the former Earlston Relief Church. The united congregation then passed successively to the United Free Church as Earlston, and to the Church of Scotland as Earlston St John's, which united with Earlston Ercildoune as Earlston in 1946. The United Presbyterian charge was in the presbytery of Melrose. |
