The United Secession congregation at Helensburgh began at the Disruption of 1843. Prior to that though there was another congregation in Helensburgh, who had their origins in the Original Burghers. The majority of this congregation joined the Established Church in 1839. For the United Secession element who did not wish to join the Free Church in 1843, an application was made to the United Presbytery of Glasgow for preachers to be sent to Helensburgh to accommodate them. Initially services took place in the town hall, but the following year, 1844, they were formed into a congregation. A new church was opened by Dr Heugh of Glasgow on 22 June 1845 and the first minister, Rev Alexander MacEwen was ordained on 2 September of the same year. The charged passed successively to the United Free Church in 1900 and the Church of Scotland in 1929 as Helensburgh St Columba. A union took place with Helensburgh: The West Kirk in 2011, the united charge taking the name Helensburgh: St Andrew’s Church of Scotland. The West Kirk was retained as the church of the united parish and St Columba’s church and halls became the Tower Digital Arts Centre and the Scottish Submarine Centre. A further union occurred on 26 February 2015 with Helensburgh: Park to form Helensburgh Parish Church. |
