Greenock West Free Church was formed at the Disruption, when the minister of the existing Greenock West church and most of his congregation adhered to the Free Church. A new church was built in Ardgowan Street in 1844 and replaced, in the same street, in 1862. There was a mission affiliated with Greenock West Free, which was formed into a charge in its own right in 1864 under the name of Greenock Free North Church. In 1900 Greenock West Free passed to the United Free Church and then subesequently to the Church of Scotland in 1929, taking the name of Greenock St Mark's Church of Scotlaned. A union took place in 1955 with Greenock Greenbank; the united charge taking the name Greenock St Mark's Greenbank. A further union took place in 1987 with Greenock the Old Kirk to form Greenock St Luke's Church of Scotland. The Church of Scotland charge was in the presbytery of Greenock and synod of Clydesdale. |
