Johnstone and Wamphray Free Church followed immediately on the Disruption, with an arrangement for supply of sermon in August 1843 and the sanctioning of the charge in the following year. The congregation worshipped in tents and barns until the erection of a church and manse in 1846. It passed successively to the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, in the latter case as Hope Memorial, which linked with Johnstone in 1959 and united with it as Johnstone in 1970. The Church of Scotland charge was in the presbytery of Annandale and synod of Dumfries. |
