history |
Stewarton, Original Secession Church originated with a petition for supply of sermon to Glasgow Presbytery in 1829. The petitioners had already erected a church and were able to have a minister settled in 1830. The congregation passed to the Church of Scotland in 1839 and removed to a new church building in 1841, leading to a legal dispute (the Stewarton case), which was one of the grounds for the Disruption. It the passed successively to the Free Church, the United Free Church, as Stewarton John Knox, and the Church of Scotland. The Church of Scotland charge is in the presbytery of Irvine and Kilmarnock and was in the synod of Ayr until the abolition of synods in 1993. |
