Inverness United Associate Session (Antiburgher) Church originated with a small group who applied to Elgin Antiburgher Presbytery for sermon in 1773. This was largely without effect, but a further petition in 1788 led to the ordination of a minister in 1790. The congregation was at first very small and poor, and could only afford a part-time minister until 1821. By the time it joined the United Presbyterians, however, it was financially self-supporting. It then passed successively to the United Free Church, as Inverness Ness Bank, and to the Church of Scotland. The Church of Scotland charge is in the presbytery of Inverness and was in the synod of Moray until the abolition of synods in 1993. |
