New Kilpatrick United Presbyterian Church originated with a petition to Glasgow Presbytery in 1874. A church, at first known as Bearsden, was already under construction and opened in the same year. A minister was inducted in 1875. The congregation passed successively to the United Free Church, as Bearsden South, and to the Church of Scotland. The church and hall were destroyed by enemy action in 1941, but the church was rebuilt and rededicated in 1955. The Church of Scotland charge is in the presbytery of Dumbarton and was in the synod of Clydesdale until the abolition of synods in 1993. In 2006 the congregations of Bearsden South and Bearsden North churches united to form Bearsden Cross. |
